About Sawn & Treated Timber

Sawn and treated timber is a versatile softwood product used across construction, landscaping, fencing and general building projects. The timber is pressure treated to improve its resistance to fungal decay and insect attack, helping provide greater durability where suitable timber is exposed to damp conditions or used outdoors.

Our range includes treated construction timber, timber battens, firrings and general-purpose sawn timber in a wide selection of sections and lengths. Typical applications include timber framing, studwork, joists, decking subframes, fencing, garden buildings, landscaping and general carpentry. Where structural performance is required, selected products are available in recognised strength grades such as C16 and C24.

Choosing the right timber depends on the application, required section size, length, treatment and, where applicable, structural grade. Use the filters above to find the size and length you need, or browse the individual Construction Timber, Battens and Firrings categories for a more specific selection.

Sawn and treated timber is softwood that has been cut to a required section and pressure treated with preservative. The treatment helps protect the timber against fungal decay and insect attack, improving its durability for suitable construction, landscaping and outdoor applications.

It is used for a wide range of projects including timber framing, stud walls, joists, decking subframes, fencing, garden buildings, landscaping, battens, roof firrings and general construction. The correct product should always be selected for the intended application.

Many pressure-treated timber products are intended for outdoor or moisture-prone applications, including fencing, landscaping and decking subframes. However, suitability depends on the individual product, treatment specification and level of exposure, so the product specification should always be checked.

No. Treatment and strength grading are separate things. Some treated timber is structurally graded to C16 or C24, while other treated products such as general-purpose battens, firrings and landscaping timber may not carry a structural strength grade. If the timber is required for structural use, choose a product with the appropriate specified grade.

C16 and C24 are strength classes used for structural softwood. C24 timber has higher characteristic strength and stiffness than C16, although the correct grade depends on the design and structural requirements of the project. Always follow the relevant plans or structural specification where timber is load-bearing.

Treated structural timber is commonly used to form decking subframes and joists. The timber section, strength grade, treatment and joist spacing should all be suitable for the intended deck design and span.

It is good practice to apply a suitable end-grain preservative to freshly cut, drilled or notched areas of treated timber. Cutting can expose timber that has received less preservative penetration, so re-treating exposed areas helps maintain protection.

Yes, in many cases treated timber can be painted, stained or coated once it is sufficiently dry and the chosen finish is suitable for treated wood. Freshly treated timber may contain additional moisture, so allowing it to dry before finishing usually gives better results.

The service life of treated timber varies depending on the treatment, application, exposure to moisture, installation and maintenance. Correctly specified and installed treated timber can provide many years of service, but timber in constant ground contact or very exposed conditions requires the appropriate treatment specification.
