About MDF

MDF, or medium density fibreboard, is a smooth and easy-to-work sheet material used for interior joinery, furniture making and decorative projects. It is manufactured from fine wood fibres bonded together under heat and pressure, creating a consistent board with no natural grain, knots or voids.

Its smooth surface makes MDF a popular choice for painted finishes, shelving, cabinets, wardrobes, wall panelling, boxing-in, displays and fitted furniture. It cuts cleanly, machines well and provides a stable base for routing, shaping and detailed joinery work.

Available in a range of thicknesses and sheet sizes, MDF is best suited to internal applications where a clean finish and accurate results are important. Whether you are building storage, creating decorative panelling or working on a bespoke joinery project, MDF offers a practical and cost-effective board that is easy to finish to a high standard.

MDF is commonly used for interior joinery, furniture, shelving, cabinets, wardrobes, wall panelling, boxing-in, displays and decorative projects. Its smooth surface makes it ideal for painted finishes, and because it has no natural grain or knots, it cuts and machines consistently. It is best suited to internal projects where a clean, accurate finish is more important than structural strength.

Standard MDF is designed for dry internal areas, such as bedrooms, living rooms, offices and general furniture projects. Moisture resistant MDF is made with improved resistance to humidity, making it better for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and other areas where moisture levels may be higher. It is not waterproof, so it still needs sealing and should not be used where it will be directly exposed to water.

Moisture resistant MDF is usually the better choice for bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms because it copes better with humid conditions than standard MDF. It can be used for cabinets, bath panels, boxing-in and decorative panelling, provided it is properly sealed and painted. Avoid using MDF where it will be soaked, left in standing water or exposed to persistent leaks.

Yes, MDF is one of the best sheet materials for painted finishes. For a smooth result, lightly sand the surface, seal the edges, and use an MDF primer before applying paint. The edges absorb more paint than the face, so they may need extra primer or sanding between coats. A good preparation process will help give a cleaner, more professional finish.

MDF can be used for shelving, especially for wardrobes, alcove units, cupboards and general storage. The thickness and span matter: longer shelves or shelves carrying heavy items may sag if the board is too thin or unsupported. For better strength, use a thicker MDF sheet, add front edging, or include brackets and supports at sensible intervals.

No, MDF is not suitable for outdoor use. Even moisture resistant MDF is designed for internal humid conditions, not external weather exposure. If MDF gets wet for long periods, it can swell, soften or break down. For outdoor projects, use a more suitable sheet material such as exterior-grade plywood, treated timber or another board designed for external use.

The right MDF thickness depends on the project. Thin MDF is useful for lightweight backing, templates and decorative panels. Medium thicknesses are commonly used for wall panelling, boxing-in, cabinet backs and drawer components. Thicker MDF is better for shelving, wardrobes, furniture, worktops and projects where extra rigidity is needed. For heavy loads, make sure the board is properly supported.

Yes, MDF can be screwed, glued, drilled and routed, which is one reason it is popular for joinery and furniture making. Pre-drilling is recommended near edges to reduce the risk of splitting, and screws should not be placed too close to the board edge. MDF also machines well, making it suitable for shaped edges, grooves, decorative profiles and custom joinery details.
